BMW M5 vs BMW 535i

Watching the performance version 5 series BMW M5 with a V8 engine race against the inline six 535i twin turbo version is a visual treat and a great comparison. Before the race, both of the drivers meet in a parking garage. Setting the scene for competition, a few rev's are growled out and then the fun begins. Racing down the interstate, the two BMW's battle for inner circle rights as the fastest beamer. This is classic American past time caught on tape despite it's current illegal connotation. This test should have been done on the track, but none the less we still get to see the two BMW's in WOT competition.

The BMW M5 is the lesser of the two vehicles, as the twin turbo 535i is much more impressive overall. With it's twin turbo engine being International Engine of the Year winner for 2007 and 2008, it's easy to see that it's far more advanced. In 2008, the 3.0 liter six cylinder engine created 326 horsepower at 5800 RPM and 332 foot pounds of torque from 1500 to 4500 RPM. It's wide low power source is what helps spool the turbo's to create the unmatched 325 boosted horsepower during the higher RPM. This is a very mildly tuned version of this vehicle, and should it be properly modified we could easily see numbers just under 1,000 horsepower and torque.

Even though the M5 is the lesser of the two, we can't count it out of the race because it's engine isn't exactly living in need. The M5 is powered by a 5 liter V8 engine with 394 horsepower and 380 foot pounds of torque with a 7000 RPM red line. It's fun to compare the old to the new, and see that there really isn't much of a difference. It looks like the small inline six with boost can keep up with the mighty V8. Many sports cars other than BMW have used the inline motor to capture high performance results, specially thanks to the engines inline design providing exceptional torque per liter values.
