Porsche 911 vs. Lamborghini Gallardo

The two tyrants of Europe are modified and compared in the following clip with quick 40 to 100+ mile per hour pulls. The 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo features upgrades like a LOC cat-back exhaust, Fabspeed catalytic converter delete pipes, Evoms ECU tune, and 120 pound weight reduction for a total of 465 all-wheel horsepower. The 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (977) has been slightly modified as well, with a comparable full straight pipe exhaust, intake, and ECU tune for an output of 500 all-wheel horsepower. These vehicles are both within the same modification bracket, but let's check out the stock specifications.

2006 Lamborghini Gallardo specifications:
  • 5.0 liter V10 engine
  • 520 bhp @ 8,000 RPM
  • 376 lb-ft @ 4,250 RPM
  • 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds
  • 3,150 pound curb weight

2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (977) specifications:
  • 3.6 liter horizontally opposed six cylinder engine
  • 480 bhp @ 6,000 RPM
  • 460 lb-ft @ 1,950 RPM
  • 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds
  • 3,572 pound curb weight (automatic)
By looking at the specifications, it's easy to see why the Gallardo smoked the Porsche. With it's modifications such as free flowing exhaust, a tune, and decreased curb weight; there's literally no chance for the slush-o-matic (tiptronic) Porsche to keep up when racing from a roll. However, I believe that if this was a race from a stop, the outcome would be much different and the Porsche would have the upper hand.

Look at how much quicker the Porsche flat six produces torque when compared to the Lamborghini V10. Boxer engines are known for their low end torque, and this Porsche is following suit. By the time the Lamborghini built enough torque to launch, the Porsche would already have a healthy lead. With 460 foot pounds placed perfectly for a launch, I believe that even though the Lamborghini appears better on paper, the Porsche would win thanks to it's incredibly low peak torque rating. Letting the boxer breath by an intake and straight exhaust can do wonders for these engines! While watching the video, pay close attention to the RPM and how the vehicles react. You can clearly see a difference in launch reaction between the two vehicles.
